Thoughts on Stockton Rush
I wanted Stockton’s end to be that of a solo adventurer who wanted to explore the depths alone, reach the trenches, feel the trenches, discover the deepest hidden secrets. Places where no one would dare to go.
I feel his courage was steered in the wrong direction - to commercialize and open up the space to Others.
The problem with “Others” is that they are just mesmerized and want to be part of it by paying a very small price (money) they are passengers who want to extract 100% of fun with 1% of price paid (well… actually 1% of fun with no price paid).
When this happens, certifications are necessary. Tests are necessary so that these kids stay safe and reach home.
But that doesn’t have to be case for a solo adventurer.
I do not like to see news, media and voices on YouTube degrade Rush to just a moneymaker cocky entrepreneur. Cutting corners, macgyvering, using expired carbon fiber from NASA or just about anything would have been fine to go and explore the deepest waters and tell the world - “look this exists and I FOUND IT”.
Rush’s legacy would have inspired people around the world those who want to go out and jump in and explore not for others but for themselves.
I do feel sad for Stockton and others around him for not having capitalized on what he could have become.
Stockton was the most appropriate lunatic you need in a domain. A Lunatic who has the power to make a dent and take humanity forward for his own sake.
Sadly we got an alternate history now.
